Ehrhardt Automation Systems is looking to hire an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to sit in our office in Granite City, IL.
1st shift position, Monday-Friday, with occasional travel potentially happening after hours and on weekends.
Salary range of $90,000-$130,000, based on experience.
Description
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing mechanical plans for the manufacturing of special machines and robotic automation equipment. These systems will perform various manufacturing processes to assemble and/or test customer parts. Working with applications engineering and the customer, the Mechanical Design Engineer will conceptualize, mechanically design, and model, all required system layouts and components for in-house fabrication and assembly. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be a technical expert and will take the engineering lead and resolve mechanical problems with shop personnel, as well as provide support to newer mechanical designers on the engineering team.

Responsibilities

Create a mechanical design of an automated system to perform all functions required to meet customers’ needs. This includes required/preferred components, cycle times, and safety guidelines.

Ensure all customer requirements are met.

Develop preliminary sketches, models and engineering calculations for new custom automation systems.

Detail part and assembly drawings as needed.

Prepare calculations on proposed machine parts and assemblies, such as tolerances, dimensions, press fits, etc.

Select items per company standards to incorporate into the project and ensure job materials are ordered to support required delivery timeframe(s).

Update processes and procedures for the mechanical design team.

Provides support during the building and installation process as needed, to ensure the machine is built properly to design specifications.

Assist in the interview process for new mechanical designers and support new designers on developing their technical skills and knowledge base.

Confer with shop personnel to resolve design and associated manufacturing challenges.

Utilize existing designs and modify parts to create new solutions.

Create print packages to be released to manufacturing engineers and purchasing department.

Verify the job and any authorized changes are being manufactured as designed and to company standards.

Maintain existing models and drawings, including revisions.

Keep the VP Engineering and engineering team informed of all pertinent information.

Take engineering lead in project validation and resolve any mechanical issues .

Adhere to company policies, safety standards, and housekeeping practices.

Deliverable Outcomes
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for delivering engineering results that include the following:
- Successfully execute (on time, on budget) mid-sized projects from inception to delivery while being involved and assisting with troubleshooting of issues.
- Create all required models, assembly and detail drawings, and BOM’s for a given project.
- Be able to independently size and specify servo systems.
- Understand and be able to design and specify pneumatic and hydraulic systems, as well as understand sensor(s) used in a particular application.
- Become the ‘go to’ in house expert for some area (e.g. Solidworks Motion, robotics applications, CAD/CAM, hydraulics troubleshooting etc.)

Qualifications

B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or A.S. and 5+ years related experience, designing custom automation systems from the ground up.

Robotic integration and EOAT design, general understanding of vision systems, sensor applications, automated assembly systems, and food industry automation experience is strongly preferred.

Strong written, verbal and presentation skills.

3D CAD/CAM experience (Solidworks experience preferred).

Understanding of metal fabrication, machining, weldments, basic pneumatics, hydraulics, and associated controls.

Ability to conduct design reviews with customers and fellow engineers.

Open-minded and willing to collaborate with an engineering team to develop the best automation solution.
